King's Day 2014. Even google was getting in on the action.
Friday was King's night, which me Cameron, Emma, and Kaia decided to celebrate. The original plan was to travel to Den Haag and to take advantage of one of the free festivals there. Then the rain started, for all of 10 minutes. But that was enough for the girls to loose faith. They declared the rain their enemy and settled for a night in Rotterdam. Inside. And they weren't for budging on the issue! Stubborn gits (but I love them for it). =P
Rather than biking to the train station, we instead made our way to Emma's for pre-drinks. Taking advantage of her lovely apartment and making ourselves comfortable, we didn't leave for a good few hours. But eventually we made our way to Witte de Withstraat - one of our favourite streets for a night out - and ending up in Blender, which was a first for us all.
Most of the people there were a fair bit older than our little crew but, after our initial surprise, it was quite nice to be left to our own devices and dance the night away. Emma and myself left quite content, but the other two were a little less impressed with the place. Regardless of any depute over venues, I think we all had a nice time!
Afterwards there was just enough time for a quick falafel sandwich *delicious* before cycling home and crashing at 5am.

Happy King's Day!
I found orange firework 'stickers' and got a bit carried away messing around with all the effects, but you get the idea! |
The following morning I had no voice. No doubt, a mixed result of my enthusiastic
singing from the previous evening and the onset of a horrific cold. Feeling more than a little rough for King's day. Bleugh.
It was around midday before I finally emerged from my pit and made it to the city centre. I met the girls there and we wandered around the shopping area, which was much busier than usual with people setting up stalls and doing impromptu performances on the street. It was pretty cool, but I'm sure nothing compared to the madness of Amsterdam.
We strolled about some more, passing some festivals which looked pretty fun. But they were also expensive and I knew, that in my sickly state, I wasn't going to last very long before needing a lie down. So after indulging in some fries and curry sauce I was done. I couldn't even manage sitting down to write my essay or mess about on facebook. Done. So very done.
...I slept most of the day away, only waking up to eat food, then to sleep some more. Possibly not the best way to spend the holidays, but my body just wasn't up to the challenge...gutted!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning I declared that I had man-flu. Maybe a slight exaggeration. And a technical impossibility. But I felt truly awful... Even worse when I discovered that I'd taken down most of my friendship group with me. Always so generous that way! ;)
On Tuesday Jess hosted Cameron's farewell dinner and pre-drinks before Bed. It was a lot of fun, and I'm always happy for someone else to cook me dinner! We also discovered that we could open a wine bottle without a corkscrew, all that is required is a shoe, a wall, some brute force, and
the perfect technique! I had every intention on joining the girls on their night out, but by the time they were all ready to get going I was ready to hit the sack. Totally done in. I did feel a little guilty, especially since it was going to be Cameron's last night out, but I know my limits. The following morning I was still feeling pretty rough, and that was purely from my cold and feeling a little under the weather - bailing was definitely a good call!
So on Wednesday me and the crew (Lindsey, Cameron, Kaia and Emma), went on a zip-lining and ropes obstacle course. It was amazing! Although it initially didn't look like we'd be able to participate because none of us had a Dutch bankcard to pay with...typical. But luckily Lindsey came to the rescue and managed to successfully guilt trip the staff by using the "Oh, but it's our friends last day!" card. At that one of the workers offered to pay with his card if we gave him the cash! What a gem!
Personally, I loved every minute of the climbing, and was elected as guinea pig by the others who forced me to lead the way (not that I minded)! Apart from Lindsey (who decided to sit out on the last one) we managed to complete four of the five courses. The got progressively more difficult and I think we reached a consensus (slightly reluctantly on my part) that number four was our limit! Still quite an achievement!
For fear of dropping our phones, we didn't manage to get any 'action shots', but this group photo will do nicely!

| With all our gear on! =D |
Later that evening Jess joined us for pizza night at my place (or, in my case, my own home-cooked bolognese - delicious)! It was just a simple, chilled out evening, and a final night with the team still intact.
On Thursday Jess, Emma, Cameron and myself watched Frozen during the afternoon before a frantic rush to put Cameron, and her luggage, on the tram. Very haphazard, and very us! It was slightly surreal to actually see someone actively pack up their belongings and leave, rather than just accepting the abstract concept that now is goodbye because so-and-so will be leaving in a few hours/days. It just seemed a lot more final. So, as the tram pulled away, the three of us just stood there in the street looking like lost puppies and didn't quite know what to do with ourselves!
But life quickly takes over once again...going back to university projects and assignments...very weird!
